Whenever we see sizzling chemistry between any of our favorite Disney Channel couples, we hold onto the hope that the actors behind them are legit in love. What's cool is that very often real relationships—romantic and otherwise—can blossom from our favorite pairings. But no matter how hard we ship certain classic relationships on-screen, sometimes the magic of Disney isn't enough to keep two people together. And even with iconic, unforgettable couples like Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas or Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, you still want the closure of knowing what note they ended on.

Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas (Michie Torres and Shane Grey)

You definitely remember that the two used to be a thing: Demi even recently admitted that she fell in love with Joe on the set of Camp Rock! And while these days she's current palling around with Joe's brother Nick (is it weird that we desperately ship Nemi?) Joe admitted that there's nothing but good vibes for his ex. "On the Demi thing, I see she’s happy and I’m happy for her," he recently told Gotham Magazine. It's clear that they'll always be fam… and they'll always have Camp Rock.

Ross Lynch and Laura Marano (Austin Moon and Ally Dawson)

We watched them grow together on Austin and Ally, legit going from musical partners to a happily married couple. But was Raura as real as Auslly?

Let's just say that while Ross and Laura were certainly close— and not opposed to kissing one another — they always skated around the romance thing. "Just because I'm working with her and we have to have that chemistry and all that stuff, I don't see it happening in the near future," Ross exclusively told J-14 back in 2013. "But you never know what's going to happen in 10 years."

Essentially, it was always the idea that they didn't want to tamper their professional relationship that kept them from being together. Well, that and the fact that Ross is involved with Courtney Eaton. But if that doesn't work out, we can't think of any reason Ross and Laura shouldn't just go for it… and we have a million reasons why they should!

Cole Sprouse and Debby Ryan (Cody Martin and Bailey Picket)

SIGH. Right now it seems like if Cole is involved with anyone it's Riverdale co-star Lili Reinhart. But there's zero competition between Cole's two on-screen girlfriends — they've all hung out as a group, and Debby's gone out with Cole and Dylan, too! Honestly, the former co-stars still have one of the cutest friendships in Disney Channel history and that's somehow way better than them ever having dated.

Ryan McCartan and Dove Cameron (Diggie Smalls And Maddie Rooney)

Yikes. Well, once upon a time the Liv and Maddie couple were real life #relationshipsgoals. In fact, our hearts soared when we heard that Ryan and Dove were getting married. But in 2016 it was announced that the two had broken off their engagement.

"Dove has decided this relationship isn't what she wants," Ryan tweeted. "We still love each other very much. Please be sensitive, as this is painful." Dove, at the time, echoed the sentiment with, "Thank you for your support & full hearts in this very intense & human time. There's a lot of love between Ryan & I. Life is beautiful & long."

But in a savage twist, Dove admitted in an Instagram comment that Ryan was "terrible" to her.

So yeah, they're decidedly not chill.

Ryan's recent behavior, including a complete social media wipe-out, has been concerning. But Dove's found love again with another Disney Channel heartthrob, her Descendants 2 co-star Thomas Doherty.

Dove Cameron and Mitchell Hope (Mal and Ben)

Maybe you're still holding out hope that Dove could end up with her Descendants BF. Well, the bad news is that they're both involved. As we mentioned Dove is in love with Thomas and Mitchell is currently dating actress Tayla Audrey.

But Bal friends shouldn't feel so distressed — the pair is super tight in real life.

"Mitchell is one of my favorite people on the face of the Earth," Dove told J-14. "I mean that in a real way. You know how people say that in Hollywood? I wouldn’t say that unless I meant it. He’s a really sensitive human being and so am I. So when two people recognize a commonality, it’s like looking across the room at someone the first day of school and it’s like I see me in you and you see you in me."

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron (Gabriella Montez and Troy Bolton)

This one still stings: Zanessa was a Disney Channel power couple for years before breaking up in 2010. Since then, Zefron's been playing the field and Vanessa has been happily with Austin Butler. But if things go south with Austin, could there be hope for a High School Musical reunion?

Not likely. While there doesn't happen to be any animosity between the two, Vanessa revealed that the exes don't talk to each other anymore. Maybe they can just sing?

Aly Michalka and Raviv "Ricky" Ullman (Keely Teslow And Phil Diffy)

The Phil of the Future pairing actually spent a lot of time together as a couple — they secretly dated from 2005 to 2011! Though things could've gotten sour from there (see: Zanessa) Aly revealed that the two are still good pals and would be down for a revival of the series!

"Raviv [Ullman, who played Phil] and I keep in touch; we're Instagram buddies," she told Teen Vogue. "Whenever I'm in New York or he's in LA, we try to see each other and get lunch."

Aaaaaah! Yes, plz!

Peyton Meyer and Rowan Blanchard (Lucas Friar and Riley Matthews)

If you shipped Lucas and Maya you could probably care less if Peyton and Rowan were a thing. In spite of all those rumors, it would seem that none of the Girl Meets World cast ever got together… although they're all still very much fam.

"On-set romance, wow, these are some questions," Peyton said when asked about any co-star couples. "No, not really. We're all just so close and we're basically like brother and sister and just best friends, so no on-set romance. The whole cast we hang out off-set, [and] on-set we have such a good time filming together. We're all like a big family together."
