Many fans were left heartbroken when Wonho announced he was leaving Monsta X last year. Now, the former member of the K-Pop group has explained why he decided to go and where his relationships with the guys stand now.

For those who missed it, the musician cut ties with the band on October 31, 2019. According to Teen Vogue, the shocking announcement came after accusations were made against him from a former friend that said he owed her a sizable sum of money. At the time, a Seoul newspaper also reported that he had used marijuana. He was later cleared of all charges.

“There were times when it was hard but I think we’re now able to cheer each other up. We’ve become more mature after what we’ve been through and although we’re not together anymore as a team, I believe that we’re strong supporters of each other,” Wonho told the outlet, when asked about is relationship with his former groupmates. “While these weren’t easy moments to face and endure, it was a time that made me think a lot and that allowed me to develop and grow — that was very important and precious for me. I thought of the fans waiting and supporting me. I sometimes spent my days with my family and friends. I also spent time alone in my studio and worked on music.”

Now, the 27-year-old has just released a new single, called “Losing You,” and is gearing up to drop a new album, called Love Synonym (#1): Right for Me, on September 4, 2020.

During the interview, Wonho also opened up about how working on his new music differed from making tunes with a group.

“On one hand I feel a lot of responsibility and pressure but it also gives me the opportunity to really express myself in a new way. I’m looking forward to the future where I can build up the story I want to tell, and show my own color,” he explained. “Having had some time to look back on myself, I learned more about myself, knowing what I was good at and what I wanted to improve on. I can’t lie that I didn’t have any worries about doing everything by myself from now on. However, I got to appreciate that I have people who are around me and support me. So I don’t worry that much now. I’ll cherish the newly given opportunity and try to focus on becoming Wonho who always shows only good things. I’m genuinely excited to go back to my fans who are my family and the most important thing for me.”

He concluded with an important message to his fans: “I’m going to repay their love and support by showing my unique color of music. I hope the time we’ll spend together will be wonderful and filled with joy!”
