Get ready, you guys, because there’s reportedly a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot in the works, but it’s super different from the original show that we all know and love. Yep, apparently they’re turning the hilarious sitcom into a drama.

For those who missed it, back in 2019, film director Morgan Cooper made a mock trailer for what he imagined a new Fresh Prince movie would look like. But instead of making it into a comedy, the trailer was pretty dark and serious.

“Ever wonder what The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might look like if it suddenly returned to the airwaves in 2019? Well, given Hollywood’s current penchant for giving everything a ‘dark’ and ‘gritty’ backstory, it would probably look quite a bit like this superbly made fan film by director Morgan Cooper,” he captioned the trailer when it first came out. “Simply titled Bel-Air, it gives Will Smith’s young ‘Will’ a considerably more dire origin story while keeping all of the major Fresh Prince beats intact.”

Well guys, the fake movie teaser must have caught the star of the show’s attention because it’s now being reported that Will is teaming up with the director to turn it into a real series! According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s going to be called Bel-Air and is described as “a dramatic take on the beloved ’90s comedy that catapulted Will to stardom over six seasons starring as the street-smart kid who moved from West Philly to the tony Los Angeles neighborhood. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today, while still delivering the swagger and fun nods to the original show.”

The outlet also reported that streaming services like Peacock, Netflix and HBO Max are currently bidding on who will get the rights to the new show. There’s no release date for it just yet, but we can’t wait to see the final product!
