All it took was one very genuine birthday wish from Niall Horan to Hailee Steinfeld, to get fans speculating as to whether or not some major sparks were flying between the two friends. Given how close they’ve been through the years, it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine — but we’re thinking the two are just totally cool with being buds. Okay, so we’ll break things down from the start. The Instagram post that started the rumor mill was shared by the “This Town” singer on the actress’ birthday last year. He wrote, “Happy birthday to the loveliest person on the planet and one of my best friends @haileesteinfeld . Have no idea what the hell is going on in this photo. Love ya hails”
It was the “love ya hails” at the end of the caption that had fans scratching their heads and wondering what exactly was going on between them — if anything at all. The post isn’t overly romantic, but that didn’t stop the speculation. Though in a recent interview with Us Weekly, Hailee decided to set the record straight on her relationship with the One Direction member.
The Edge of Seventeen star said, “I feel so lucky that [my fans] care enough about me to know what I’m doing every second of every day, but I think that sometimes it’s hard for people in general to realize that there are boundaries to a person’s life and personal life. I am a very private person. I do love that I have the opportunity to share with them what I’m comfortable with and they’re there to listen and support me.”
Okay, so that’s not exactly an answer but Hailee isn’t wrong. Whatever is happening between her and the “Slow Hands” crooner is their business. So even though they seem to be just friends, fans shouldn’t expect a whole lot of talk from either of them about anything. Looks like their lips will continue to be sealed on this one.
