It appears Demi Lovato and Halsey are not “cool for the summer.” There seems to be some drama stirring between the two artists, and it has to do with Demi’s lyrics from one of her hit singles.

While sitting down with Paper magazine, Halsey talked about how she feels bisexuality is exploited in pop music. And although Demi wasn’t called out by name, she definitely alluded to her lyrics in “Cool for the Summer.”

“There’s bi-phobia from the straight community and from the LGBT community,” Halsey said in the interview. “There’s a lack of acceptance.”

So where does Demi fit into the picture? Well, her lyrics about having to hide one’s sexuality seems to be what Halsey was hinting at.

Halsey continued, “Bisexuality as a taboo. ‘Don’t tell your mom’ or ‘We shouldn’t do this’ or ‘This feels so wrong but it’s so right.'”

That sounds a like Demi’s “Cool for the Summer” lyric that says, “Don’t tell your mother.”

So what does Demi think about it? She’s just happy people are still talking about a song that came out two years ago.

“You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later,” she tweeted.

Although it’s hard to deny that Halsey made this dig at Demi’s lyrics, there’s no reason for the two to fight. The two are actually both super strong women who speak out about real issues in the world that truly matter, like raising awareness for mental health. Not to mention, Demi’s actually professed her love for Halsey in the past. So basically, these two women are destined to be friends.

As a bisexual woman who is often vocal about many aspects of her life, including living with bipolar disorder, Halsey is an open book. Even with her latest hit “Strangers,” which is a love between between two women, she felt there wouldn’t be many artists to collab with who would truly fit her lyrics.

“I’m not gonna put a straight female on it, because then that’s just exploitive and weird and makes no sense. The fact alone that I was even struggling to find queer women in my field to get on the song – and then I thought of Lauren Jauregui, who’s a friend of mine, and the best thing about it is that it wasn’t a compromise.

“It wasn’t like, ‘Oh well, Lauren’s openly bi, so we’ll just put her on it.’ [Including Lauren] made the song better. Her voice brings an entirely new perspective. She’s an incredible artist and the way that she delivered a lot of the melodies…she really, really made it her own. It just felt so right.”

Halsey is never afraid to speak up for what she feels is right, and that’s why we love her.
