We might know KJ Apa as a red-headed cutie on TV, but as Riverdale fans know, the star naturally has brown hair. Turns out, there’s a whole lot that goes into the process. And for KJ, it’s not necessarily an enjoyable process. In fact, he’s afraid all the chemical treatments might cause him to go bald!
“My hair is permanently orange now because it’s been bleached. The only way for me to go back to brunette is if I grow my hair out, so they had to put a temporary mouse in it for the scene. Mate, the amount of s–t that has been put in my hair is unbelievable. I wouldn’t be surprised if I go bald in a couple years. They used to do my eyebrows, but I told them no more dying my eyebrows,” KJ said in an interview with Huffington Post.
This wasn’t the first time he expressed concern – he’s been struggling with this since he first started his role as Archie Andrews.
“[Dying my hair is] pretty gnarly, man. It’s not my favorite thing to do, but obviously I’ve got to do it because the roots keep coming up and my hair grows really fast. So, two weeks max I can go shooting, and then I have to get it dyed again. I’m sitting there for at least two-and-a-half hours, so I’m on my iPad and I read some scripts and stuff. I keep myself entertained,” he said in an interview with Vulture. “It was really painful the first and the second time I got it done because they do my eyebrows as well. They ended up bleaching my eyebrows, and I had two holes — they burnt into my skin. I was like, ‘Oh, my, we’ve got to sort this out.’”
The 21-year-old actor even opened up to Empire about how he’s afraid he might lose his hair from the dying process.
“It was, honestly, scary at the start, because they had to dye it once a week and I’m shooting for six months. They had to bleach it,” KJ said. “I’m probably going to be bald by the end of the series.”
Here’s to hoping KJ keeps those gorgeous, luscious locks. But tbh, he looks great no matter what!
