Believe it or not, celebrities struggle with their self esteem just as much as everyone else. While they may appear to be happy and confident on the outside, many stars like Ariel Winter and Bella Thorne have spoken out about their insecurities. Even Frozen's Kristen Bell has revealed that she battles with anxiety and depression in her every day life.
The good news is that hope is not lost! The key is to focus on yourself and your well-being, because nothing is more important than taking care of you and your mental health! Luckily, Kristen has some amazing tips to get you started and she shared them with Shine, an organization that sends you inspirational texts every day (which we highly recommend).
According to the actress, we all just need to stop being so hard on ourselves. "The most effective way to move forward and experience growth is through self-pardon," she said. Did you get a low grade on a test you studied your butt off for? Have a bad game out on the field or court? It's OK. Take a deep breath and tell yourself exactly what you would tell your bestie, because you're just as important as they are!
Another easy way to help boost your self esteem is by helping other people. Look at it this way, when you focus your energy on doing something nice for someone else, you'll feel good about yourself, too. "Helping others truly is helping yourself," Kristen said. So get out there and do some community service, or volunteer in whatever ways you can. And don't be afraid to start small — helping mom carry in groceries is still an act of kindness, after all.
So now that you're not being so hard on yourself and focusing on helping others, Kristen also wants you to stop sweating the small stuff! "Cher once told me, 'If it doesn't matter in 5 years, it doesn't matter,'" she said. "I think about this often and find myself consistently applying the rule... It allows me to focus on what is, ultimately, worth remembering."
Feeling upset over something mean someone said to you online? Did you totally embarrass yourself in front of your crush? Let it go (cue Frozen song). But seriously, it may feel like the end of the world now, but in five years time you'll be mad at yourself for wasting so much time thinking about something so negative. Fill your life with as much positivity as you can, and when something unexpected happens, ask yourself if it will really matter in a few years.
Kristen's last two tips are perhaps the most important ones yet! First, don't be afraid to ask for help. "There is a mightiness that comes with asking for help, being vulnerable and not going at it alone," she said.
And lastly, when all else fails, order a pizza. "Sometimes, you just need to order pizza," she said.
We'll definitely take you up on that advice Kristen! Because well, sometimes pizza and a movie is the best solution for a bad day.
