We have some good news and some bad news, you guys. The good news? Liam Payne just revealed that he’s been auditioning for a ton of movie roles (SCREAMING!). But the bad news? He tried out for the upcoming West Side Story remake, and unfortunately, he didn’t get the part.

Speaking to Roman Kemp on the new Capital Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 10 the One Direction member explained that he was ready to venture into acting.

“I’ve had some great auditions for a couple of different things, which have been amazing,” he said. “I’m enjoying it. It’s a fun process.”

OMG… Can you imagine how iconic it would be to see him on the big screen? Wow, talk about a dream come true. And get this — we were super close to seeing him in West Side Story!

“The first thing I ever auditioned for was the remake of West Side Story, which is being done by Steven Spielberg,” the 25-year-old continued. “On my last birthday, I got a message saying, ‘You need to meet [Steven].’ So I had to go and do an audition in front of him which was quite wild.”

But Liam explained that although he made it pretty far in the audition process, he unfortunately didn’t get the part.

“I didn’t get it but I was in the last 5 people for it, which I was quite happy with because it was a big part in the film,” he said. “I mean, it was the first audition I had ever done and I put four tapes in and then managed to get to meet Steven Spielberg so it was pretty amazing.”

As fans know, the remake of the Broadway classic is coming to theaters next year. And you’re not going to believe who’s starring in it. Drum roll please… it was announced in October that Ansel Elgort is going to play Tony! Yep, that means we’re about to see the Fault in Our Stars actor dance and sing his heart out for almost two hours. As for his love interest, 17-year-old YouTube star Rachel Zegler was cast as Maria.

OK, so as sad as we are that Liam wasn’t cast in the movie, we’re still pretty excited. And hopefully the “Strip that Down” singer will land another role soon!
