Long before One Direction was on hiatus, one things fans knew about the boys – beside their undeniable talent, was that each of them had very different roles to fill within the group. If any Directioners out there weren’t totally aware of that fact, they definitely were after Liam Payne dropped that tidbit of information during his most recent interview with the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw.

During the chat, Payno revealed that sometimes he just wanted to trade places with former 1D member, Zayn Malik. During the interview the “Bedroom Floor” singer admitted that during his days of doing press with the group, he was always the guy who would have to be chatty – even when he didn’t feel like talking. Liam said, “I was the guy for the guy then. I was the talky guy. I feel like it was nice to be Zayn sometimes. He just came in and he wasn’t expected to say very much, unless prompted to do so. So we would all just carry on.”

Fans know that the two are pretty good friends to this day. Payno even gave Zayn a little shout out for his birthday on Twitter, proving that even though they aren’t close – there’s still some love there.

One other thing Liam mentioned during the interview, which he’s talked about before, is his role of being the funny one in 1D. In the past he’s mentioned the challenges of constantly trying to be happy, and now he’s somewhat relieved that he can show off his serious side. He said, “It used to be my job to look silly when I was in the band. It was all about larking about but now it’s all about being serious.”

Fans definitely aren’t complaining about seeing another side to Payno. Despite the hiatus heartbreak, supporting the boys as they live their best life and branch out of their comfort zones is what being a Directioner is all about.
