Ever since it premiered back in March 2017, everyone was immediately obsessed with 13 Reasons Why. The Selena Gomez-produced drama constantly left viewers on the edge of their seats with its constant twists and turns. Well, now that the show has officially come to an end, the former Disney Channel starlet has looked back at the series and revealed why it became such an “important” part of her career.

“Whether uncomfortable or not, viewed as inappropriate or not, it has created conversation,” the 28-year-old told Allure during her cover story, released on Wednesday, September 9. “And I feel like it was important for me to do.”

As fans know, the series — based on the book by Jay Asher — took place following the death of a high school student named Hannah Baker, who left a box of tapes behind explaining the reasons for her suicide. Throughout the four seasons, the characters found themselves surrounded by various mysteries and tried to put the pieces together after their lives were turned upside-down.

Aside from her work on 13 Reasons Why, Selena also reflected on another producing credit she recently added to her resume. For those who missed it, back in 2019, she helped produce the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented, which according to the streaming service, followed “eight undocumented families’ fates roller-coast as the United States’ immigration policies are transformed.”

“I knew I related to that in so many ways. A lot of my family were immigrants, and created lives for themselves here,” Selena explained. “I’m just once removed from being an [immigrant]. I’m proud of that side of who I am. But seeing what happened [to the families in the documentary], I just felt helpless — completely disgusted and frustrated — and I wanted to do something that would make people uncomfortable, that would force people to watch something that maybe they just don’t want to see, or don’t understand.”

As for what’s next in Selena’s career, well, aside from her “first love” of acting, the brunette beauty is focusing on being “an entrepreneur” with the recently released Rare Beauty makeup line.
