Believe it or not but today is the 10-year anniversary of Wizards of Waverly Place and the creator of the show is spilling secrets in light of the occasion. Todd Greenwald chatted with International Business Times about that crazy hat song fans started to know and love in the first season of Wizards and how Selena Gomez and Jennifer Stone put their own spin on it. But, before we get to the good stuff, it may help if we travel back in time a bit. What actually was the hat dance? It was a little quirky song that Selena and Jennifer’s character would sing every time they saw a hat. Sometimes, Selena’s on-screen mom would join in too.

The song went a little something like this. “What’s that? A hat? Crazy, funky, junky hat. Overslept, hair unsightly. Trying to look like Keira Knightley. We’ve been there, we’ve done that, we see right through your funky hat.” Yes, bizarre but incredibly catchy and lovable all around. Todd explained that even though the writers may have come up with the words, it was Selena and Jennifer who were the masterminds behind the dance that went along with it.

He said the song was supposed to be Selena and Jennifer’s characters spin on a secret handshake, “It was to highlight a Harper and Alex bonding moment, to show that they had some history together. It came out of the writers’ room, but where it really came to life was when Jennifer and Selena gave it the dance.”

He continued, “It was just a collaboration of a silly line of words, brought to life during run-through by Jennifer and Selena. They gave it the life…You don’t write that stuff with the intent of it being taken that way. But it’s always great to see that.” Just so everyone knows, the writers of the show didn’t sit in a room thinking of this dance themselves. LOL. Todd admitted he actually gets asked that question by fans all the time. Can you imagine?!

Now that we’ve got the full deets about the hat song and dance, it makes the whole thing even sweeter. Not only does it show how much fun Selena and Jennifer had on set but also what their relationship and friendship was like when the cameras stopped rolling. They really weren’t just co-stars they were besties who loved to act silly and hang out together.

Selena nor Jennifer have yet to comment on the spilled secret of the hat dance and how those creative juices started flowing when the dance was in the making. So, we’re kind of hoping to hear from them. Or just kind of hoping they’ll do the hat dance one more time. It was iconic and it’s the 10-year anniversary after all so what better time to bust out the moves.
