Despite having a close bond, it’s a given that Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, have a bit of a complicated relationship. According to reports, things have only escalated between the “Fetish” singer and her family since deciding to get back together with Justin Bieber — someone her loved ones have mixed feelings about. Recently, sources claimed that Sel’s mother was taken to the hospital after the two got into a pretty heated argument about her relationship with the Biebs. Now E Online is reporting that the drama between mother and daughter has only escalated through the years, and this Jelena reunion has nothing to do with the ongoing tension.
A source told the publication, “Selena has always said that the one person that means the most to her is her mom, Mandy. But still, they’ve had a really complicated relationship and have gone through a lot of ups and downs.”
Allegedly, Selena and her mom didn’t talk for an “entire year” after the starlet fired her mom as her manager in 2014 — but we’re not entirely sure about the timeline. (By June 2015, the pop star was posted a throwback Instagram photo with her mom that said, “I love you momma. I’m proud to be your daughter.”) We’re totally going to take this with a grain of salt, given that many families have their ongoing issues and there’s still a lot of love there.
However, E!‘s source insists that the firing strained their bond, adding, “It caused a huge rift in their relationship. Mandy wouldn’t even let Selena talk to her sister for a long time. Mandy and Selena’s stepdad really did everything they could for Selena so when she fired her it took a toll on Mandy emotionally and professionally. Mandy lost her clout as a manager after Selena left. It caused a major rift in their relationship but they eventually reconnected.”
Obviously, at the time it was a tough decision for all parties involved, but Sel and her mother were able to move past it and produce 13 Reasons Why together. Despite Selena going through rough patch within her family, Justin wants to remain a source of support for the songstress.
The source continued to say, “Selena is dealing with some family issues at the moment and Justin is there for her. He doesn’t want to cause any problems between Selena and her mom…Justin and Selena are still together.”
Again, we don’t know for sure how Sel’s entire family feels about Justin. Maybe this reunion did already add to her ongoing drama with her mother. Maybe it didn’t. But whatever problems escalate with Mandy and Sel – they always find their way out of it. They have one very strong and close bond.
