It all started when Joe and Sophie were working out in a private gym in New York City yesterday. Brendan Fallis, a DJ and fitness guru, posted a video clip of the duo on his Instagram story. Joe can be seen in the background and as the camera turns to face Sophie she can be heard saying hello to the viewers.
However, what she exactly said was unclear at first. Fans believed she had used a racial slur and said, "What's up, my n–."
Because she was getting so much backlash over the whole thing and Brendan deleted the story to make things seem even more suspicious, Sophie eventually released a statement about it. She said, "I used the word 'motherf-ckers' in a recent video posted in an Instagram story and not a hateful racial slur that has been suggested. I am incredibly upset that anyone would think otherwise, and I want to make it clear that I would never use such an abhorrent word."
So, to be clear, she did not use the racial slur. Sometimes, video audio especially in crowded places or on social media can get fuzzy. While that would have been totally disrespectful of her to say, we need to remember that she quickly addressed it and it's not what she really said.
This isn't the only way Sophie has been making headlines either. She recently revealed just how easy it is to date Joe so we're not surprised that they do almost everything together – even when it comes to sweating it out at the gym!
She chatted with InStyle magazine and said, "I found it easier to date someone who understands the industry or is in that world. You realize that you're not going to see each other all the time. And you don't feel like a jerk when you're like, 'My publicist says I can't do this.'"
The pair started dating back in November of 2016 and have been going strong ever since. Hopefully next time she won't curse at all while on video with her former Disney Channel star boyfriend so they both can save themselves some drama!
