One thing is for sure, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards lived up to the hype. Viewers got everything they wanted between the drama, Taylor Swift’s subtle but much-needed shade at literally everyone in the industry, cute couples and great musical performances. But, where was Selena Gomez and The Weeknd? They were notably missing. It’s pretty common for celebrities to skip out on award shows if they’ve got other things on their plate at the moment, but to miss a show where you are set to perform is really something that gets heads turning.

Selena was nominated for her collaborative song “We Don’t Talk Anymore” with Charlie Puth and her dance track, “It Ain’t Me” with Kygo. The Weeknd was nominated for a slew of other awards and his name was used in a 2017 VMA promo clip on August 7th. The clip claimed that the “Starboy” singer was going to take his talents to the stage and perform – something he hasn’t done since 2015.

But, everyone was totally confused when both stars and namely one of Hollywood’s hottest couples was a no show. Selena had an excuse, at least. The “Bad Liar” singer made a statement during a radio interview a week before the VMA’s and said, “I don’t know if I will [go to the VMAs]. I might be shooting but I cannot believe I got nominated, which is really cool, and I’m very upset that I won’t be there.”

Okay, so we get it. But, where was her famous boyfriend? No one knows. MTV has not commented on why he didn’t show and The Weeknd hasn’t either. However, he mysteriously cancelled one of his private gigs on Friday two hours before he was supposed to go on stage. Apparently, there were “unforeseen production issues” which caused him to cancel. But, sources told Variety that the correct permits were not issued and secured for the set to take place.

It’s all very weird. Two times in a span of just a couple of days that The Weeknd didn’t perform when he was supposed to is definitely not the norm. Hopefully, nothing is really going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Selena and The Weeknd were a match made in celebrity couple heaven when they walked the red carpet at the 2017 MET Gala and shippers were hoping the Video Music Awards would be round two of that same magic. Unfortunately, they were let down.

Fingers crossed that we get some answers sooner rather than later. This isn’t the first time an artist has abruptly cancelled their performance at an awards show. Miley Cyrus did the same thing at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards. However, she used her absence to announce a brand new single, “Younger Now” dropping days later. The Weeknd has been radio silent which kind of worries us, TBH.
