To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has become an instant classic, and the rom-com has given us plenty to obsess over. Like the fact that we ALL now need a Peter Kavinsky in our lives, and it feels like Lara Jean is actually us. It’s the kind of movie that simply warms your heart and speaks directly to your soul. Except, there’s one plotline they pretty much dropped, and we’re STILL thinking about it. It all comes down to Lara Jean’s favorite scrunchie — and umm, like, did she ever get it back?! So let’s get into it:
As we know, Lara Jean is a style icon. She really has such a unique fashion sense, and she’s confident in how she dresses. And girl loves her scrunchies. Now as we all know, LJ goes to a party with Peter — and he tells her how gorgeous she looks with her hair down, so he holds onto her beloved scrunchie.
Then, his ex-girlfriend Gen steals the scrunchie from Peter at the party and keeps it until after the famous ski trip — and Gen goes on to tell Lara Jean Peter gave it to her. 100% not true btw, but Lara Jean thinking Peter gave one of her prized possessions to her former friend is heartbreaking. But then that’s it. We get our happily ever after, where Lara Jean and Peter realize they’re meant to be, but we never find out what happens to the scrunchie. Does Lara Jean get it back from Gen? Does Gen wear it all the time or did she throw it away once it served its purpose of throwing a wrench in the Peter and Lara Jean love story? WE NEED ANSWERS. And we’re not the only ones who feel this way.

We’re all on edge about this. We had hoped Lara Jean would’ve snatched it out of Gen’s hand, but she was clearly in shock to see Gen have it to begin with. So Peter, bro, time to make it up to your girl and get it back from your former girlfriend since he just let Gen take it from him to begin with. And someone else who feels this way? Peter K himself, Noah Centineo. Speaking to Bustle, the 22-year-old actor explained why Peter let this whole scrunchie debacle happen.
“I totally understand why Peter allowed it,” Noah said. “So Peter’s dad left two summers earlier than the film takes place. He’s looking for love. He’s looking for this support and this comfortability, and his ex-girlfriend, to him, was that. It was this safe space, this comfortable space. He can’t help but give into her. ‘You look good, you always look good.’ Like, of course. This feels like home. He’s powerless. That being said, he should grow the f— up and respect his current situation.”
OK, Noah, we see you. He agrees with the rest of us! As does LJ herself, Lana Condor. The 21-year-old starlet opened up about this massive myserty to Elle while reading wild fan theories for that possible sequel movie everyone is desperately waiting. And basically, she was confused the scrunchie disappeared to begin with.
“I’m going to be real honest with you right now. I would like that scrunchie back. And I do feel that if Peter found it for me and brought it back, that would be a point for Peter, for sure. Like, how rude? And then Gen just puts it in her hair? It was in my hair, like how do you know it’s clean? I don’t know why she did that, it’s rude! Peter should’ve kept it too and stuck up for his girl. Still makes me mad,” she said.
We feel you, girl. The only hope we have of this issue getting resolved is that if that sequel does happen, this major plot point will hopefully be addressed. There are three books in Jenny Han’s series which the movie is based on and there was that cliffhanger end-credits scene, too. It’s up to Netflix to give fans the answer they desperately need! We’re holding out hope we will get another movie too, as the director Susan Johnson explained to Entertainment Tonight that she’s down to make another one.
“We’re all attached contractually if we want to do the movie again, which is super exciting, and if our schedules all key up. Netflix said that their general timeframe is 28 days; they watch how well the movie does over the period of a month and once that’s over, they can make a decision about a sequel. I love the fans being vocal about it, the more, the better,” Susan said.
Well, fans have been VERY vocal just about this missing scrunchie alone, not even factoring every other amazing aspect of this movie. There’s still a solid chance we’ll find out the fate of the scrunchie after all.
