The only way we're getting through the fact that iCarly premiered ten whole years ago is the fact that we are constantly being given a dose of nostalgia with every episode Nickelodeon airs. Thank goodness for re-runs, right? Gone are the days of Carly Shay, Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson's web series and it's genius slapstick humor. Thankfully though, we may finally get the answers we have been longing for all these years later. Yep, that's right. We're talking about that central love triangle between Carly, Sam and Freddie.
Even though the show ended for multiple reasons, the spirit of iCarly managed to live on. Of course, Jennette McCurdy continued to portray Sam in Sam & Cat, while Miranda Cosgrove went off to college. But aside from that, Nathan Kress has made his on-screen return to the network this month. Nathan guest-starred and directed the latest episode of Game Shakers, titled "Game Shippers." Although he didn't star as Freddie and instead played himself, it was still nothing short of amazing to see him back home. Before the episode aired, he took to Twitter to commemorate the show's anniversary and reminded fans just how special the role of Freddie will always be to him.
Brb crying. We caught up with Nathan before this highly anticipated Game Shakers episode too, and he exclusively spilled to us what it was like being in front of the camera on a Nick show after all this time, especially since in the episode Babe, Kenzie, Tripe G and Hudson track the actor down to finally debunk the _iCarly+ love triangle and have him answer the burning question of who really had Freddie's heart, Carly or Sam. Finally – the clarity we've been waiting for!
"The whole point of the episode is that they're essentially doing whatever it takes to get to me to ask me this question. And ultimately, it ends with them breaking and entering and very much invading my personal space in order to ask the question of, 'Who did Freddie love more?'" Nathan told us.
Freddie's crush on Carly was apparent right off the bat – in the very first episode of iCarly, as a matter of fact. They even once dated after he saved Carly from a taco truck, but they ended up breaking up because Freddie didn't want Carly dating him just because he saved her life. It's no surprise people are fans of Creddie.
But Seddie shippers have a different outlook though. They start off as frenemies, always teasing each other and giving one another a hard time. Freddie and Sam also dated for a while, but eventually ended up breaking up as well. It's all very complex, and we cannot wait to see what's going to be revealed in this upcoming episode of Game Shakers.
"I never thought that I would have the opportunity to direct a project that I’m also acting in, at least so early in my career. I’m so excited for the opportunity to stretch myself on both sides of the camera," Nathan said in an interview. "The concept of the episode, and the little Easter Eggs we included definitely brought back the iCarly nostalgia. I even had the added bonus of getting to direct my wife in the episode, as well!"
The episode finally aired during the weekend and there were for sure tons of iCarly Easter Eggs like Nathan teased. Spaghetti tacos were eaten, Nathan's hotel room was 8D, the same as his character's apartment, there was a large photo of a dachshund dog in Nathan's hotel room and any iCarly fan knows those dogs were someone always incorporated into the show, and yup, Nathan's wife London did make an appearance.
She was coming to see her friend Gary Wolf, another iCarly reference. That was the name of the hot senior from Freddie, Carly and Sam's school. But we know what you really want to know...
Who did Freddie really love, Carly or Sam?
Well, once the Game Shakers crew breaks into Nathan's room and asks him, he explains "I'm just an actor, I'm not one of the geniuses who wrote iCarly. And since it was never established on the show, I don't know which girl Freddie loved more."
OK, so you know the Game Shakers crew wasn't going to just take this answer so they asked him as Nathan to make a choice.
"Look I'm not really supposed to say, [but] in my opinion if Freddie had to choose Carly or Sam, would definitely pick..."
AND THAT'S WHERE HE GOT INTERRUPTED. Double G, Kel Mitchell's character, ends up crashing into Nathan's hotel window and the security shows up to kick everyone out of Nathan's room so we never get an exact answer. This iCarly triangle will forever remain a mystery it seems.
