Justin Bieber hasn’t shown up to the Grammy Awards since 2016, but there was a glimmer of hope he’d be there this year. He collaborated with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee for the remix of their international hit song, “Despacito”. The song was everywhere and it topped the Billboard Hot 100 list for a record-breaking 16 weeks. It was on constant replay because it was a freaking jam. So, you’d think, that Justin would join his fellow collaborators at the award show to perform a song he had helped make so big. But, we were sadly mistaken.

Luis and Daddy Yankee got up on stage and performed the original version of “Despacito” which is entirely in Spanish. The track was nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Unfortunately, they didn’t take home any actual Grammy trophies. But, even with the three nominations it got, still didn’t persuade Justin to show up and support all of their hard work.

So, where was Justin? We know he just got back from a super relaxing vacation with his mom, Pattie Mallette. He was also seen recently having lunch with his dad, Jeremy Bieber, and his little brother, Jaxon Bieber. There has been a lot of family time happening lately, but other than that Justin’s schedule is pretty much clear so we’re not totally sure why he wasn’t there. BUT he was spotted by TMZ in West Hollywood on Sunday hanging out with friends after having dinner at Mr. Chow. While the Biebs never won the award for Best New Artist when he could have been up for it, he told the publication he doesn’t know but, “it could be” a curse for the artist who do win alluding to the fact that most of the Best New Artists sometimes go under the radar after winning. But, that’s all he had to say. Nothing about “Despacito” and nothing about his failure to show.

It’s important to note, though, that Luis did ask Justin to perform with himself and Daddy Yankee. He spoke to Entertainment Tonight and said, “Of course we extended the invitation. He’s part of the nomination and he helped the song grow even more, and I’m so proud of the job that he did. I’m so proud that he decided to sing most of the song in Spanish… so we’re very grateful. He’s a good friend, he’s a good guy, so hopefully, we’ll be able to celebrate together.” Justin is reportedly not attending any major public events as he continues to work on his next album. While he hasn’t confirmed that, we can only hope that’s the case.
