Yin Chang played manipulative nerd Nelly Yuki on Gossip Girl, but this spring she's got a whole new high school character to play in PROM. J-14 got the chance to talk with Yin and she spilled the deets on what the movie's about and how much she loves her cast mates.
J-14: Tell us about PROM.
Yin Chang: Well, they're comparing the success hopefully to be like High School Musical, but the whole tone is kind of more like a John Hughes movie, The Breakfast Club and all the other classic films. That's very exciting. The whole tone is just so authentic and genuine. I'm really excited. The film is beautiful, just the colors and everything, the way the shot it, cinematography-wise.
J-14: Is you character Mei totally different than Nelly Yuki from Gossip Girl?
Yin: Yes! First of all, she does not wear glasses and she looks fabulous. No, I'm kidding! Totally joking. But she is very different from Nelly Yuki. First of all, Nelly Yuki, she was sweet in the beginning but then she became very manipulative. But this whole world is not a heightened reality like Gossip Girl at all. It's really real. She's a typical high schooler and she's part of that perfect couple. There's always that one perfect couple in high school. Always.
J-14: PROM is a Disney film, but is it going to push the boundaries?
Yin: I don't think we're pushing the boundaries too much because it's definitely not going to be PG-13. It's very friendly for tweens. Parents, too, I'm sure they're going to want to watch it. They can relate to it as well, in their past when they went to prom, all their high school sweethearts. It's going to be exciting. I would say the raciest part... there are some juicy bits, but you'll have to see it. It's exciting, though. I'm very, very excited.
J-14: What was it like working with Aimee Teegarden?
Yin: Oh, she's so sweet! I love her. She's really, really down-to-earth, very humble. Very mature for her age, actually. I'm two years older than her and I was really surprised. She acts like a 25-year-old. She has her own place in Orange County, which is very impressive. She's very responsible. I really like her a lot. She's very relatable. Very easy to get along with.
J-14: What about Nicholas Braun?
Yin: Oh, he's so cute! I call him my pillow, that's my nickname for him, because he's so tall and I'm like a midget compared to him. Well, everyone is a midget compared to him. Yeah, he's like 6'6'' now. He grew two more inches and it's insane. He's really so sweet.
