Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas have been friends for years and, while no one really speculated that they had any romantic feelings for each other, their fans had a feeling that they would forever be in each other's lives. With Demi's new album, Tell Me You Love Me, set to drop at midnight tonight, she's already started doing press and explaining exactly what some of the songs are about. The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer sat down with Noisey and revealed that TWO songs on the album are about a special person in her life – a person who is 100 percent not her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, if anyone wondered.
One of the songs in question is titled, "Ruin the Friendship." Yes, cryptic already, we know. There's a lyric on the track that reads, "Put down your cigar and pick me up." Well, HELLO, Nick absolutely loves cigars. There are literally thousands of photos of him on social media holding a cigar and just literally hanging out with cigars. Of course, this is all speculation, but it's hard not to pinpoint him on this one.
Demi said about the tune, "Ruin the Friendship," "I was frustrated with a certain situation and I was like, 'You know what, I'm just going to write about it.' And so I did, and sent [the songs] to that person, and that was...Interesting. Any time you send a song about the person, to the person—it's ballsy. It's like, 'Hey! Here's my feelings for you!'…They knew [about my feelings], but neither of us had acknowledged [them] before. And then it turned out that person had written a song about me, and we exchanged songs."
HOLD. THE. DAMN. PHONE. Demi wants to ruin her friendship with Nick because she wants to be more than friends – we've cracked the code, you guys! We're freaking the eff out, if you couldn't tell. Just read between the lines here. It sounds like Demi is saying that she was frustrated with this person (AKA Nick) not understanding how much she actually liked him and the only way to express that was in song form. She put her heart on her sleeve and did something super courageous. I mean, can you imagine telling your crush straight up that you really, really like them? It's nervewracking! She didn't know what his reaction was going to be or if he would feel the same way.
Then she drops another bombshell. This person, AKA Nick, had written a song for her! Did she know it was about her? Had she assumed it was about her but was afraid to ask? Is the song even out yet? So. many. questions.
Demi continued, "That person was like, 'That's an incredible song.' And I was like, "Yeah, well. It's like, 'Hel-lo!'...They had their reasons. But, yeah." So, basically, Nick approves. Demi also revealed that the song, "Only Forever" is about the same person. The entirety of the lyrics for both songs have yet to hit the airwaves, but we are already shipping Demi and Nick, er Nemi. They've been pals for years and Nick has seen everything the songstress has gone through between relationships, her struggle with addictions, and her milestones. Plus, he knows what she's like to work with as they've gone on tour together and started a record label.
Just recently Demi chatted with BBC News about this song. They went so far to ask her if the exchanging of songs and revealing of emotions led to anything romantic. Demi responded, "Ummm… Let's move on!" OMG. So she didn't confirm but she also didn't deny, which could mean that something DID happen between her and Nick and maybe it just didn't work out. Maybe they tried to see if there was a spark, but nothing came of it. Again, this a lot of 'maybes' and guesses but her answer is super questionable. If nothing romantic came between them, wouldn't she have just said that it didn't? Hmmm...
Regardless of their hook-up situation, Nick really has been there through it all. It's not surprising that she's developed some feelings for him, IF the songs are actually about him. Obviously, nothing has been confirmed. But the pieces just kind of fit together. Demi was pretty vague about what kind of feelings he has for her and if they will ever be reciprocated, but we can only hope for the best. The strongest relationships start as friendships and this really could be one that actually makes it.
