In the past year, Sam Smith has kind of completely gone off the grid until just recently. He allegedly needed time to experience life, write lyrics and create new material. Now that he's back and beginning to release music again, he's also opening up about some other personal parts of his life. Sam was just seen getting super cozy with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn. Like kissing, handing holding, you know being all cute together. However, in a new interview, Sam reveals more about his gender identity – more than he ever has before.

The "Too Good at Goodbyes" singer chatted with The Sunday Times and said, "I don't know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man…I love a heel. I’ve got loads of heels at home." Okay, talk about a bombshell. He continued, "There was one moment in my life where I didn't own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr. Martens and huge fur coats, for 2.5 years."

Sam was also asked if he associates with the term cisgender male. This means that he identifies with the sex he was assigned at birth which is obviously male. He said, "No. I mean, I've got these tattoos on my fingers." The tattoos he allegedly points to were two Venus symbols which is the gendered sign for female. Now that Sam is fully out there and engaged in the LGBTQ community, he's talking about his story. He's opening up about his life and what it was like to be a gay man from a small village where he grew up. He also got totally honest about his biggest fear during this period of his life.

Sam explained, "Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending… And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village — I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say." By the sounds of his music, it seems like he figured out what he wanted to say and said it.

We're giving Sam super big props for revealing his true gender identity. This isn't always easy to be so open about, especially when you're in the public eye. It's really touching that he can share all this and have that confidence knowing his fans will always accept and love him no matter what. He really has come a long way.
