J-14 caught up with Wizards of Waverly Place star Gregg Sulkin to chat about his new Disney Channel Original Movie, Avalon High, learning a new sport, and the scoop on Alex and Mason's relationship this season! Avalon High airs this Friday, November 12, at 8 p.m., followed by the season four premiere of Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel.
J-14: Why should people watch Avalon High?
Gregg Sulkin: The story has so much involved in it -- a love triangle, friendships, problems, things that teenagers face every single day of their lives. The movie was shot in New Zealand and the story revolves around a girl who goes to a new school only to find out that her classmates are reincarnation of the King Arthur story. Some people will think, "How can I relate to this story about King Arthur?" But they all can! Everyone will hopefully like it and relate to the characters and the problems that each character faces.
J-14: Would you say you're a lot like your character, Will?
Gregg: Well, I'm not American, but I can relate to him in some ways. I love sports and when I was playing soccer I was always trying to be the leader on the team and the one who takes control. And in a way, I can also relate to the fact that that he is the hero of the school and everyone looks up to him and expects a lot from him. But they don't realize how hard it is to deal with so much pressure. I'm very fortunate that people give me opportunities, but some people don't understand all the other pressure that comes with it.
J-14: You grew up playing tennis and soccer, but in this movie you play a star quarterback. Was it fun learning how to play football?
Gregg: It was just an amazing, amazing experience to learn a new sport. That was like a dream come true! I had a coach kind of teaching me the game. He was an ex-NFL player, and then we had football training sessions where we practiced with a team. The football scenes were my favorite scenes to film because you know, boys are always going to be boys!
J-14: What was it like working with costar Britt Robertson?
Gregg: It was awesome! My dad was ill at the time, and I couldn't have wished for a better friend to look after my dad. She was so supportive of him and I was very grateful to have her around. And she is such a talented actress and a very well respected individual.
J-14: What can we expect to happen between Mason and Alex on season four of Wizards of Waverly Place?
Gregg: I'm not going to tell you what exactly, but there are a lot of things that come in the way of Mason and Alex's relationship. But deep down, there is such a great chemistry between Mason and Alex and such a strong love that they're really trying hard to keep it alive.
