What pops into your mind when you think of family fun? Games? Singing? Dancing? Maybe even pizza? Maybe even all of these things combined? Well last week I got the opportunity to chat with Laughing Pizza, a family band that you can see daily on PBS!
Laughing Pizza consists of 15-year-old Emily and her parents, Billy and Lisa, and they travel across the nation in a totally awesome multi-colored van! Laughing Pizza is all about bringing the family together and spending time with the ones you love. More than that, the family band has an influential story that inspires them to motivate others.
Emily was born two months early, a preemie, and she had a lot a trouble breathing and swallowing. She was in and out of the hospital until she was around 20 months old, which put a real strain on the family. "Everyone around [preemies] lives through it in a much more real way, even though we're the ones who are directly affected," Emily told J-14. My twin brother and I were also born early, so I really understood what Emily and her family went through.
Since the age of four, Emily has worn hearing aids due to mild hearing loss, but that hasn't stopped her from learning the flute, piano, drums, guitar, or bass. Emily and her parents are really close, and she believes that their hardships have brought them even closer. "I think it's partially why we spend so much time together and are in this band to begin with," Emily says.
Luckily, Emily and her family have had a lot of amazing times since those tough days. Laughing Pizza has performed at the White House for three consecutive years and has shared the stage with big names like Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers! Plus Laughing Pizza's new album Let's Go Play! is currently available on iTunes.
