J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Y i YELL!
Here are five things you need to know about Y i YELL! who are currently in the studio finishing their debut EP that's due out this Fall!
This upcoming Los Angeles based band consists of brothers Michael and Demitri Lerios and their girl next door (literally!) Gaby Symons. Guitarist Michael and drummer Demitri were both surrounded by music from a young age -- having a father in the music industry. Lead vocalist Gabby discovered music and singing as a means of expression. "Music just makes you feel so good, so alive," Gabby tells J-14.
Inspiration for their songs and even their band name came from the variation of reasons one would want to scream. "We like to incorporate who we are as a band in each of our songs," Demetri says. "We write about the reasons why we yell, the reasons why anyone would yell. It can be anything from excitement, being anxious or even being fed up with something. The world is moving so fast in our generation and we want to be that outlet for our fans when things get overwhelming." As for why Demetri yells, he continues, "Honestly, the reasons are endless... Some are good some are bad. We like to think of it as yelling for those who want to be heard, yelling because of the crazy situations that we find ourselves in everyday."
With Demetri still in middle school and Gabby and Michael in college, the three have a busy schedule that requires a whole lot of balancing. "Being in middle school and working on music is a lot, but really it is like being apart of an intense traveling sports team," Demetri says. Michael adds, "It is difficult at times but it's manageable. Sometimes practice or recording sessions have to be rescheduled but we all make it work."
When asked to describe their sound, the band has a hard time coming up with the right words. "Truthfully we really believe we have our own 'Y I YELL!' sound, but we have influences from all over," they tell J-14. "For us, it has a lot to do with fusing the old with the new..."
Michael describes their first single "Always The Weekend" as "a fun song about escape." "We always try and incorporate a message in our songs. We try and shed light on just how crazy life is, but that it is ok to take a step back and relax." Michael tells J-14. "We want people to feel a sense of escape with our music, but at the same time, we want people to hear the music and lyrics that we craft specifically to engage our fans."
