Garrett Clayton is getting real with his fans, all for a truly amazing reason. The Teen Beach Movie star took to Instagram to share some insight on his role in the upcoming movie, Reach, and during his heartfelt message, he revealed that he’s happily been in a relationship with a man, Blake Knight, for quite some time now.

While Garrett’s public coming out wasn’t the main focus of his words, it is truly commendable he’s willing to be so open and honest with his fans who have supported him for years now. Garrett has always kept his personal life private so the fact that he’s sharing this on Instagram, a super public platform, is nothing short of amazing. The goal of Garrett’s message, though, was to explain what drew him to his upcoming movie, which deals with some very serious issues many young people are unfortunately dealing with today.

“With the release of my new movie REACH coming up, I thought it was important to explain why I took on this project in the first place. REACH deals with some very serious and timely topics that have affected me personally, and have likely influenced many of your lives as well. (I also prefer to share things that are particularly important for me here on my IG) instead of in some random magazine or online article – because you are the ones that have been rooting for me and following me on my professional and personal journey in life,” Garret wrote. “When I read the script for REACH, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of. I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and – on top of it all – myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time (@hrhblakeknight) have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events. These topics – not always easy to discuss- are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person… then it was all worth it. ♥️”

Reach, which also stars Joey Bragg and Jordan Doww, is obviously a high school drama, and follows the story of Garrett’s character, who makes it known to a pro-suicide support group that he intends on taking his own life. He sadly gets bullied at school and has a tough home life, but when he befriends a new kid at school, things start to change. The topics this movie addresses are all intense, yet very real, and with Garret deciding to share a little bit more about his personal life when he didn’t have to, that says just how much this project means to him. Bravo, Garrett.
