The mayor of Manchester, England, Andy Burnham, spoke out against Eminem‘s new song. On Friday, January 17, the 47-year-old rapper shook the internet when he released a surprise album. Shortly after the record was released, one of the tracks — titled “Unaccommodating” — started to receive major backlash. The song included a lyric about the May 2017 bombing in Manchester, which occurred at the end of an Ariana Grande concert and tragically killed 22 people.

“I’m contemplating yelling ‘bombs away’ on the game / Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting,” he rapped before the sound of an explosion was heard on the song.

After he heard the song, Andy spoke out against the line of lyrics and slammed the rapper in a statement to BBC News.

“This is unnecessarily hurtful and deeply disrespectful to the families and all those affected,” he told the news outlet.

Figen Murray, whose son died during the attack, also voiced her opinion on the recently released song. She took to Twitter and called it “pointless.”

“Feels like he is piggybacking on the fame of Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber and says distasteful things about other celebrities,” she wrote. “Not clever. Totally pointless. And before all Eminem fans pounce on me, I am not interested and will not engage.”

Even some of Eminem’s biggest fans expressed negative feelings about the line of lyrics.

“I’m a huge Eminem fan but the lyric about the Manchester bombing is so disrespectful. Possibly my all-time favorite artist has left me disappointed with such a bizarre and hurtful lyric aimed at my city,” an upset fan wrote. One other said, “I love Eminem but this guy really has a bar in his new song mocking the Ariana Grande concert bombing and then has an explosion noise straight after.”

Previously, in 2017, Eminem supported the Manchester bombing victims on social media and asked his Twitter followers to donate to their families.

He has yet to respond to the social media backlash about the song
