It may appear like Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley‘s characters on The Vampire Diaries are a perfect match, but IRL, the actress just admitted that she actually “despised” her costar at first! Say what?!

In case you forgot, the brunette beauty and the 36-year-old cutie played Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore in the epic CW series. We were all pretty obsessed with their relationship when the show first aired back in 2009, and for eight years we had the pleasure of watching their magical love story unfold. But Nina revealed that when the cameras stopped rolling, they didn’t exactly get along.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” she said on the “Directionally Challenged” podcast on Monday, June 10. “We really just didn’t get along the first maybe five months of shooting.”

OMG. Our hearts! But despite their major rift, the 30-year-old explained that they never let it effect their work.

“I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?'” she recalled. “Because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry.”

But according to Nina, what viewers really saw was “a fine line between love and hate.”

“We despised each other so much, that it read as love,” she explained.

Wow, they definitely had us fooled! But despite their rocky start, the TV couple did eventually become close off screen.

“We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine. Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most [now]. We’re probably the closest,” she added. “It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”

Awww. We’re so glad they were able to work through their differences in the end.
