It's no secret that we're beyond hyped about Selena Gomez's upcoming new song release, "Bad Liar," but there is a secret meaning in one of the promotional images the singer has shared leading up to its debut. In fact, the photo contains a detail so deeply personal, our eyes welled up with tears when its meaning was uncovered.
You will be able to easily spot the stand-out piece in Selena's photo shoot pic, but the story may not quite register with you yet.
There's no denying that Selena looks stunning in this captivating snap, but you may quickly notice that she is wearing a medical bracelet and some gauze on her wrist. Some fans originally criticized the vibe of the shoot, suggesting that it looked like it was glorifying suicide or referring to Selena's involvement in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why – but that is not the case.
As Elle notes, the bright yellow "Risk" bracelet is actually something that is given out to hospital patients who are in danger of falling and need extra nurse attention if they are moving around after a weakening round of treatment.
Petra Collins, the photographer who captured this haunting shot, addressed the issue on Instagram and told fans that this is actually Selena's real hospital bracelet. As it turns out, Selena arrived on set after being in the hospital for lupus treatment.
Gradually, Selena has opened up more and more about her lupus diagnosis, which she had not immediately told fans about, but she typically does not address her condition in bold ways.
"It still makes me a little uncomfortable. I waited for the right time to talk about it because I am in a great place and I'm very healthy. I'm not trying to be loud about it. It was time to use my platform to help," she has previously told Billboard.
So while it looks like her lupus journey won't be the focus of her "Bad Liar" song or accompanying music video, it's eerily still a part of this track, since it's a part of her.
