13 Reasons Why super fans will likely already know that several of the Netflix series cast members recently got matching semi-colon tattoos. Tommy Dorfman, Alisha Boe, Brandon Flynn, and producer Selena Gomez all decided to get a twinning ink design as the symbol has come to represent mental health awareness and suicide prevention – something their show is very involved in.

Well now, Tommy, who plays Ryan Shaver in the series, is spilling more of the behind-the-scenes story that went along with meeting Selena – and giving us insight as to everyone’s take on the tattoo decisions.

“[Selena] was always sort of like a presence, and she was on set for the last couple weeks of shooting. Her passion inspired all of us, especially at the end,” Tommy told W magazine. “People don’t realize that she’s a human being, so it really didn’t change the dynamic on set or anything. She’s super inspiring and has a lot of experience to share and was very gracious. And now we have matching tattoos!”

“It was kind of on a whim,” he says about how the tattoos came to be. “I kind of knew that I wanted to get it and we ran into each other earlier in the week shopping. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m going to do this thing on Sunday with Alicia [who plays Angela on the show],’ and she was down. So we just picked her up and we went.”

Tommy knows that the show and the ink bonds everyone in a completely special way.

“We are the same age, and obviously with very different life experiences, but you kind of go through the same thing at certain ages,” he shared. “And that’s the same with everyone in the cast; we could just relate with each other.”
