Earlier this year, the K-Pop boy band BTS took the world by storm as their huge following grew from primarily South Korea to spread out all over the world. They even won their first Billboard Music Award in a category that Justin Bieber has taken home for the past several years. In case you don't already know their name, you will soon. And if you have any lingering questions about their name, well, we will try to answer them all.
The letters "BTS" officially stand for their Korean name "Bangtan Sonyeondan." However, the global sensations recently decided to take another step to further appeal to international fans. The group announced a new English name with a whole new meaning. The group's new name "Beyond the Scene" doubles as a different version of the beloved acronym "BTS." Check out the video below to reveal the boy band's new name and how their biggest fans have reacted to the change.
The fans' reactions have varied greatly, from tears and identity crises to little or no reaction to the slight change. Though the new English band name comes with an additional meaning and a new logo, the boys have not changed. BTS is still the same BTS that we know and love. Even though BTS only has Japanese and Korean language music right now, they have performed all over the United States. Maybe one day, the band will grace us with a song in English.
The name change appears to be an effort to relate more directly to English-speaking audiences. This alteration could lead to even more international interest in the band. However, the band is not giving up on their original name. The group will continue to use the name "Bangtan Sonyeondan" (방탄소년단) as well, especially in Korea. The literal translation in English is "Bulletproof Boy Scouts."
BTS' full name is pronounced Bah-ng-tan So-nyeon-dahn. Watch the video below to hear the pronunciation.
BTS is made up of seven members: Jin (Kim Seok-jin), Suga (Min Yoon-gi), J-Hope (Jung Ho-seok), Rap Monster (Kim Nam-joon), Jimin (Park Ji-min), V (Kim Tae-hyung), Jungkook (Jeon Jeong-guk). Check out the video above to learn how each name is pronounced.
BTS fans are known as the A.R.M.Y., which stands for "Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth." The group also has a BTS Global Official Fanclub A.R.M.Y. that people around the world can join. It's their fourth year and fourth A.R.M.Y., but unfortunately applications for 2017 closed in May. What does a membership get you? Fans are able to access a wide range of exclusive content, including a birthday message and special events like a Q&A with the group.
Rap Monster (Kim Nam-joon) thanked their fans (official and otherwise) in English after winning Top Social Artist at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. "We still cannot believe we're standing on this stage at the Billboard Music Awards," he said. "And it is so great to see all the artists we admire and [we] feel honored to be in this category with such great artists, you know, like right in front of us. Most importantly, this award belongs to the [everyday] people all around the world who shine the light and love on us by the millions and make BTS proud. Please ARMY, remember what we say, 'Love myself, love yourself.'"
