You know you’re having a bad day when even the majority of the Minions aren’t on your side. That’s just one of the things that villain-turned-hero-turned-unemployed-hero-turned-potential-return-to-villain (whew, we’re exhausted from that one) Gru is dealing with in Despicable Me 3.
Gru’s journey, of course, began with the original Despicable Me (2010), continued with Despicable Me 2 (2013) and goes even further with the third adventure which will be here before you know it. Along the way he also appeared (in a younger form) in the spin-off film Minions (2015).
Considering it's been four years since Gru's last adventure, we know you've got questions about Despicable Me 3, and — conveniently — we've got answers.
June 30th. We're really this close to the film hitting theaters.
Gru, who is trying so hard to be good, has been fired from the Anti-Villain League. He and his wife Lucy had been assigned to stop Belthazar Bratt, a former ‘80s child star who is intent on destroying Hollywood. Their failure to do so results in them being let go. Gru feels lost, until a stranger tells him that he’s got a long-lost twin brother, who wants nothing more than to follow in his despicable brother’s footsteps. Touching, ain’t it? Admit it, the tears are starting to well up.
His name is Dru, and he also happens to be voiced by Gru’s Steve Carrell. In many ways, he’s also the exact opposite of Gru. He has a full head of hair, and is extremely charming and rich, thanks to inheriting their father’s pig farm and accompanying fortune. Dru wants to be a villain like their father was, but never received any training. His hope is that Gru will take him under his villainous wing.

When he learns about Dru, Gru asks his mother for the truth. She explains that she did give birth to twins, but shortly after doing so, she and Gru’s father got divorced, each taking one of the kids. Not surprisingly, she torments Gru by telling him that she got second choice (seriously, is there any question why he went down the wrong path?).
The real villain of the piece. He is the former child star of the ’80s TV show Evil Bratt, where he played a kid villain bent on world destruction...that is, until he hit puberty and the show was abruptly canceled. Clinging to the past with his fashion and hairstyle, Bratt has become obsessed with the villainous character he played on TV and is determined to exact revenge on the world that turned its back on him. Armed with his weaponized "keytar" and explosive Rubik’s Cubes, Bratt proves to be Gru’s toughest nemesis yet—as he attempts to re-create the world-ending events from his favorite episode of Evil Bratt and take revenge on Hollywood.
Oh, they'll be around. Those tiny yellow buckets of mischief are hoping that the events of the film will lead all of them back to a life of crime. When Gru tells them this is not the case, they go on strike and head out on their own, led by Minion Mel. Thankfully Jerry and Dave, the minions who missed the strike, remain with Gru and his family. Meanwhile, setting out on their own, the other Minions are all arrested on a Hollywood studio lot. Realizing they need Gru, they plan their escape.
Not exactly. It seems that Gru believes that by partnering with Dru, he will gain access to the high-tech gadgets of their father, which he’ll be able to use to finally take down Balthazar Bratt and be rehired by the Anti-Villain League. Will it work? Okay, maybe we shouldn’t have called this everything you need to know about Despicable Me 3, because we ain’t tellin’.
Nope. These films are from Illumination Entertainment. Their other movies have included Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. Next year they'll be bringing out their version of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
That's all going to depend on how many times you and your friends check out the new film. In Hollywood it all comes down to money. What we do know at this point is that in 2020 we're getting Minions 2.
