Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift have been besties for what seems like forever and now fans think Tay wants to be more than friends. Sorry, but that’s just not true. This isn’t one of those Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas situations. Demi may have written about ruining her friendship with Nick and even told him about it, but that’s not the case with Taylor and Ed. Ever since Reputation dropped, Swifites think that her song, “Dress” is about the red-headed cutie. There’s a line in the song that reads, “I don’t want you like a best friend.” Not only that but the editors here at J-14 also caught another line that reads, “There is an indentation/ In the shape of you / Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo” HELLO, Ed obviously has a song called “Shape of You.” Could this really be a hidden reference?

Unfortunately, no. Ed chatted with a Singapore magazine called August Man and addressed the speculation, “I don’t think it is [about me]. I think if you read into it… it’s not… you know, because she mentions someone with a buzzcut haircut, and I’ve never had a buzzcut haircut.” Okay, so he’s got a very valid point there. In hindsight, the song is probably more about her current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, than Ed.

Taylor and Joe met at the 2016 Met Gala in New York City. At the time, he was sporting a buzz cut and she had bleach blonde hair which she also sings about on the track. During this phase in Taylor’s life, she was pretty much on the outs with Calvin Harris. It’s rumored that not only did she meet Joe at the event, but she met Tom Hiddleston there as well. No one is quite sure why she decided to go for Tom instead of Joe at the time since she’s most likely singing about him in this song. Has she had Joe in the back of her head ever since they met? Does this mean they were always meant to be? Totally not sure. But, we are sure that “Dress” isn’t about Ed.

And this isn’t the first time that he addressed crazy rumors about him and Tay. Back in March, he addressed the speculation that he dated Taylor at some point while he went around the world with her on the Red Tour. He said, “I found that aspect quite lazy journalism. There wasn’t any truth to it whatsoever. So, basically, if you cross Ed he’s not afraid to call you out especially if you’re making up some crazy stuff about his strictly platonic friendship with the one and only Queen Taylor.
