Hi J-14 readers!
My name is Rachel and I'm a How I Met Your Mother addict. In fact, addict may not even cover it. Not only does the entire J-14 staff have to put up with my random daily "Did you see the episode where..." soliloquies, but my friends are forced to watch one of the dozens of episodes on my DVR whenever they come over... and they have to put up with me repeating the punchlines because I've already seen each episode more than a dozen times.
It's even gone as far as me blogging "How I Met Your Father" adventures to my BFF... and there just may be a chance I secretly think that I might run into the characters Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily, and Robin when I'm roaming New York's Upper West Side and that they'll adopt me into their circle of friends.
Yes, I may be crazy (picture: all my friends nodding in agreement), but this show just gets me. From the jokes about Canada (my country of obsession!) to New Jersey (where I currently live!) to random appearances by my fave stars (everyone from Britney Spears to Regis Philbin) and, most of all, the random outbursts into music (from Robin Sparkles videos to Neil Patrick Harris' song-and-dance "Girls Vs. Suits" routine), it's shocking how much this show reflects my life.
In case you've never seen it, How I Met Your Mother follows five friends living in New York City. The twist? It's being narrated from the future year of 2030 by the character Ted, as he's telling all the stories of his younger life to his future kids (played by Wizards of Waverly Place's David Henrie and Lyndsy Fonseca). Hindsight might be 20/20, but the whole premise of the show is based on Ted's hope that the perfect girl is out there for him... and that life will bring him to her, no matter the odds. It made be in the guise of a LOL comedy, but this just might be the most romantic show on TV.
And it's that optimism about life that the show has that makes it such a feel-good sitcom that I just can't stop watching (over and over and over...).
Case in point... this hopeful passage from one episode: "The great moments of your life won't necessarily be the things you do. They'll also be what happen to you. Now I'm not saying you can't take action to affect the outcome of your life, you have to take action, and you will. But never forget, that on any day, you can step out your door and your whole life can change forever. You see, the universe has a plan and that plan is always in motion. A butterfly flaps its wings and it starts to rain. It's a scary thought, but it's also kind of wonderful. All these little parts of the machine constantly working, making sure you end up exactly where you're supposed to be, exactly when you're supposed to be there. The right place at the right time."
Wiser words have never been said... and on those days when I'm feeling down, I just repeat those words and hit play yet again on another episode of HIMYM that I might have already seen a million times before... but still puts a smile on my face and hope in my heart.
Have you ever seen How I Met Your Mother? If not, what's your fave show and why?
Can't wait to hear from you!
