Is Ian Somerhalder about to reprise his iconic The Vampire Diaries role? On Tuesday, December 3, the 40-year-old revealed to TV Guide if fans of The CW show can expect him to follow in some of his former costars’ footsteps and make an appearance as Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries spinoff series, Legacies. Unfortunately for fans of the show, it looks like that’s never going to happen.

“He’s not alive … Damon is dead,” the actor explained. “That’s how he finds Stefan. He became human, and then he knocks on the door and he goes home. Now he’s with his brother.”

As fans of the series know, the final episode — which aired on March 10, 2017 — shows Damon reuniting with Elena in the afterlife and joining his brother, Stefan, at the Salvatore Boardinghouse so they can all live happily ever after. In the timeline, Legacies takes places years after the events in The Vampire Diaries, which rules out any possible Ian cameo since his character has already been dead for years. Sorry, but it looks like you’ll just have to binge watch the series on Netflix in order to get your Damon fix.

That’s not all! Despite saying he’d never make an appearance on the show, the star totally fangirled about Legacies. During the interview, Ian revealed that when his The Vampire Diaries costar Paul Wesley went to direct an episode of the new series, he sent his onscreen brother a video and it turned out the new cast is still using their old set.

“I do know that when Paul went to direct Legacies, he sent me this video message like, ‘Whoa bro, this is insane’,” he said. “Because they have the same set. They have our old set and stuff. It’s just like a time warp.”

Although fans may never get to see Damon on their TVs again, they can watch Ian fight vampires in his new Netflix series V Wars
