ICYMI, Taylor Swift is the cover star of Elle‘s latest issue, and inside she shared 30 things she learned before turning 30. The most heartbreaking part of the article, however, was when she opened up about her parents’ battles with cancer, revealing that her mother, Andrea Swift, is battling the illness once again.
“Both of my parents have had cancer, and my mom is now fighting her battle with it again,” she told the magazine. “It’s taught me that there are real problems and then there’s everything else. My mom’s cancer is a real problem. I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress, and prayers to real problems now.”
This was the first time the “Look What You Made Me Do” songstress addressed her mother’s condition in several years. The first time she ever opened about it was in an emotional Tumblr post she wrote back in 2015. In the note, she spoke about wanting her fans to know, but also wanting to keep some of the details private.
“This is something my family and I thought you should know about now,” the pop star wrote. “For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it. The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”
As for her father, Scott Swift, the “Delicate” singer has never revealed that he also had cancer. And although it sounds like he’s doing OK at the moment, it’s completely heartbreaking to find out that Andrea’s cancer has returned.
Clearly, Tay’s had to a learn a lot of tough life lessons all before turning 30, and although her family’s been thrown some curveballs, we’re so grateful that she opened up to fans about how she’s dealt with her parents’ health struggles — especially since many of them are probably going through the very same thing.
