The princess of Genovia might be back for more, and we’re just about freaking out over here! Yep, that’s right. The Princess Diaries could actually be getting a third installment, which truly would be the greatest blessing of all. Leading lady Anne Hathaway appeared on What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday, Jan. 24 and was asked about rumors of a possible The Princess Diaries 3. And lucky for us fans, her response was super promising.
“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” the 36-year-old actress said. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”
So yeah, somewhere out there in the universe, a script for The Princess Diaries 3 is lying around. Sorry, WHAT?!
“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” the Les Misérables actress continued. “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”
It’s safe to say The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement wasn’t enough — we need more of Mia Thermopolis! Even Julie Andrews agrees! The 83-year-old actress actually confirmed in 2017 that she and Anne would love to make a third film in honor of director Garry Marshall, who passed away in 2016.
“I think we might do it in honor of him,” the star said in an interview. “Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.”
Author Meg Cabot, who is the genius behind The Princess Diaries novels, has also spoken on the matter. Back in 2017, she told EW that she hasn’t heard anything, but that a script existed even back then.
“I am not allowed to say,” the writer continued. “I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed. But it’s really more following the movie than the books.”
So there you have it – you most likely won’t see a whole lot from the book series incorporated into the third film. Let’s just hope the cast is ready for more. The movie honestly would not be the same without the whole OG The Princess Diaries crew: Julie would have to be present as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, and obviously it wouldn’t even be able to happen without Anne as Mia!
We would also want to see all the others return, including Hector Elizondo (Joe), Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz), Mandy Moore (Lana Thomas), Robert Schwartzman (Michael Moscovitz) and Erik von Detten (Josh Bryant). One could only hope they’ll all be down! We’ll just be here waiting until this all comes together. It would truly be a shame if it didn’t.
If one thing is for sure, it’s that we need this more than Mia needed that epic makeover!
