One of the perks of being a J-14 editor is getting to read advanced copies of lots of great teen reads before they hit shelves (The Carrie Diaries, anyone?). But the absolute best book I've come across lately is one that actually came out more than a year ago. I know I'm a little behind on this one, but I fell so in love with the character of Laurel from page one I knew I just had to make Wings by AprilLynne Pike our first official J-14 Book Club pick.
Wings tells the story of 15-year-old Laurel, a typical girl just trying to fit in at a new school -- until she wakes up one morning to find a giant flower growing like wings out of her back. She soon finds out that nothing in her life is what it seems and her past is far more magical than she could have ever imagined. With the help of her best friend David (who also happens to be totally cute and crushworthy) and a faerie hottie named Tamani, Laurel must unravels mystery after mystery to save her human family before its too late.
I haven't read fantasy fiction this good since The Twilight Saga (or gotten so caught up in a love triangle!) and I have a sneaky feeling Team David and Team Tamani shirts will be popping up soon. Aprilynne Pike's writing is so captivating, you won't be able to put this book down.
The best news? Not only is Wings just the first book in a series of four (the sequel Spells is out now!), but a film version is already in the works too and a certain teen superstar is attached to play Laurel.
After you've finished reading Wings, head on over to our J-14 Book Club message board to post questions, feedback, and chat with other readers (and this J-14 editor :) about the book.
Happy reading, J-14ers!
