J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Hot Chelle Rae!
Here are five things you need to know about Hot Chelle Rae, who are currently on the Friday Is Forever tour with We The Kings, The Summer Set, The Downtown Fiction, and Action Item!
From Nashville, TN, Hot Chelle Rae consists of front man Ryan Keith Follese, his brother and drummer Jamie Follese, guitarist Nash Overstreet, and bassist Ian Keaggy. All four guys have music in the blood -- Ryan, Jamie, and Nash's family members are Nashville songwriters and Ian's dad is a Grammy nominated guitarist.
Though the guys are great friends now, in 2005 when Ryan and Nash first met, things weren't nearly as friendly. "We definitely didn't like each other," Follese says. "We dressed differently. I was clean-cut and Nash wasn't. We looked like polar opposites, and it was just, like, no." Ian and Jamie joined later after changing their initial band name from Miracle Drug to Hot Chelle Rae, named after a poser on Myspace.
After some evolution, Ryan tells J-14 that the best way to describe their sound is pop rock with dance beats. "We did some showcases and they were like, 'ya'll sound like different bands' and we're like, 'dang you're right,'" Ryan says. "We finally realized that we loved to play stuff that we love, what we listen to. So it has dance elements and stuff like that."
One of the most important things for Hot Chelle Rae is for them to connect and relate to their fans through their music. "We can have a lot of fun and goof off, or we can be very serious and work really hard, and the album shows it all." Nash says. "We've got songs for people to listen to if they're going through a break-up, like 'The Distance' or 'Last One Standing,' or if they want to just forget about work, like 'I Like to Dance,' or they want to dream about the future, like 'Say.' We've tried hard to make it completely accessible and something people can really relate to no matter what's going on in their lives."
Nash's last name sound familiar? That's because his brother is Glee's cutie Chord Overstreet, who has a cameo in their music video, "Tonight Tonight".
