Never Shout Never's new album, Harmony, hits stores Tuesday, August 24, and J-14 chatted with frontman Christofer Drew all about the new record, how he deals with critics, and the weirdest song on his iPhone!
J-14: What is the story behind your new album "Harmony"?
Never Shout Never's Christofer Drew: It's fun. It has a little growth to it because as a band, we are trying to mature. At the same time, I made this one for the fans. They've been through a lot with me -- lots of experimentation, lots of changing. I just wanted to make the record for them and help them out with life and any problems. I know what they want, so it's the balance of doing what I want and what they want too. I feel like I balanced it pretty well.
J-14: Is there anything specific that has inspired this new album?
Christofer: Anything like an ex-girlfriend? I was getting over that and still kind of am. It sucks. Ex-girlfriend, family, and life in general. It's a harder record but I didn't want to make it too heavy. The last record was pretty heavy because I was in deep stuff. It was a really heavy record even for me to listen to. This one is light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek.
J-14: Which song off the album are you most connected to?
Christofer: "The Past" because that one tells the story since I was 14 -- just how I was stupid and did stupid things. I wanted to get out of my town [Joplin, MO]. It explains how I came to this place.
J-14: How do you deal with the negativity that's often directed towards you?
Christofer: I don't care what anybody says -- I am just living and doing my thing. If they don't like it, let them do their thing. Everybody has their own thing and everybody wants to do their own thing. It's kind of a bummer whenever someone tries to interfere with what you are trying to do and how you are trying to live. I just take it with a grain of salt -- in one ear and out the other.
J-14: If you weren't in music, what would you be doing?
Christofer: I'd probably be exploring in any way I can, traveling and having fun, living life and seeing the world. But this is the most amazing opportunity to do that. I get to play music and go to a town where people actually know how I am. People won't cut me out. It is just me and my friends. I think I am in the best position that I could have ever asked for.
J-14: What is the most embarrassing song you have on your iPhone?
Christofer: The Brady Bunch Theme Song. That is great.
J-14: What is the craziest fan encounter you've had so far?
Christofer: They are all crazy because I'm crazy! One time, a long time ago, we got this crazy teddy bear. He is life-size, and it was kind of uncalled for -- he could barely fit in the bus.
