Ever since Mac Miller‘s posthumous album Circles was released on January 17, 2020, many fans have wondered if the female voice in the background of the fifth track, titled “I Can See,” was that of his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande. On Monday, January 20, the Sweetener singer’s vocal cameo was seemingly confirmed by music producer Jon Brion.

In an interview with the New York Times, the famed producer and composer looked back and opened up about his time working with the late rapper on this album. When he was asked if there were Ariana background vocals on “I Can See,” Jon said, “I believe there are.”

He added that he actually doesn’t know for sure, because “I Can See” was one of the songs Mac had worked on alone before he passed away.

“That was a pre-existing track. There were a few songs the family gave me that he’d been working on independently that I thought fit thematically with what we had worked on,” he explained. “‘I Can See’ was one of those, also ‘Complicated,’ ‘Blue World’ and ‘Everybody.’ I played some things on those tracks to make them feel like the others, but those vocals were already there. It wasn’t like an executive decision or anything.”

Jon’s semi-confirmation came just a few days after Ariana on what would have been his 28th birthday. She posted a short clip of the rapper and his dog, Myron. Mac can be seen playing the piano with his back turned to Ariana, who seemed to be filming while sitting on a couch. She captioned the post with a blue heart emoji.

As fans know, Mac tragically passed away from an accidental overdose in September 2018. Since his death, the “Thank U, Next” singer has been candid with fans about their relationship. She stayed close to Mac and his family after they split in May 2018. In July 2019, she opened up about their relationship and revealed the real reason behind their breakup

“By no means was what we had perfect, but, like, f**k. He was the best person ever, and he didn’t deserve the demons he had,” she admitted to Vogue at the time. “I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming… less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away.”
