Ariana Grande just released a gorgeous new love song, titled “Imagine,” and we’ve had it on repeat all morning. In the catchy tune, Ari describes a super-sweet and romantic relationship, and it honestly couldn’t be cuter. She sings about staying up all night and eating “pad thai” with someone, taking bubble baths, and kissing and cuddling the mystery man. Naturally, we all want to know who the loving ballad is about, so we’ve gone ahead and decoded all the clues the singer’s dropped about the inspiration for the song. Many fans believe that the lyrics point to Mac Miller, so we’re breaking down the lyrics. Get the tissues ready.

“We go like up ’til I’m ‘sleep on your chest / Love how my face fits so good in your neck,” Ariana sings. “Imagine a world like that.”

Some fans believe that the song isn’t really about anyone in particular and that it’s describing what Ariana’s dream relationship would be like. But other fans think it might be about the singer’s ex-boyfriend and longtime friend, Mac Miller, who passed away from a tragic overdose back in September. Some believe that in the song, Ariana is imagining what life with Mac could be like now. As J-14 readers know, the couple dated for almost two years before splitting back in May, but ever since his tragic death, the 25-year-old has been very public about how much she’s missing him.

After some investigation, we can confirm that the song is indeed about one of her ex-boyfriends. And although we’re not 100 percent sure it’s about Mac, the “God Is A Woman” singer has dropped some major clues that it is. Ariana explained via Twitter that the song is about an old relationship, which is now “unattainable.”

“[It’s] a simple, beautiful love that is now (and forever) unattainable,” she tweeted a fan. “Kind of like…pretending [the relationship] never ended. Denial.”

“A lot of this album mourns failed yet important, beautiful relationships in my life (as well as celebrates growth/exploring new independence),” she went on. “But for those of you asking about “Imagine,” I would say if “Thank U, Next” = acceptance… “Imagine” = denial. Hope that makes sense.”

Ariana also explained that the sad energy of the song will balance out the fun, excited songs on the album like “Thank U, Next” and the unreleased track, “Seven Rings.”

“Those are super self assured / commanding and this one is more vulnerable / unsure,” she continued. “I wanted to mix up the energy a li’l bit as both of those themes are equally prevalent on the album / in my life rn.”

Fans also noticed that the rapper had an “Imagine” tattoo on his inner bicep. All the clues are definitely pointing to Mac for this song – ugh, our hearts are breaking.
