New Zealand group Dax Project is spilling all the tea on what it’s like to work with Hailee Steinfeld. The band, who has opened up for Camila Cabello and Lorde, just dropped an epic new single with the brunette beauty, called “Woke Up Late,” and it’s a total bop. Prepare to have it on repeat, guys, because we cannot stop listening!
The catchy dance song is all about a fun night out ending in romance. And talking to J-14 exclusively, the band dished all about the inspiration behind the song. “’Woke Up Late’ is about wrapping your head around the adventure of the night before and ultimately deciding that you’re cool with it,” the group told us.
So what made them want to work with the Pitch Perfect star? “Given the nature of this story, it did cross our minds while writing it as to how it might work as a duet — with a female voice telling her side,” they explained. “We’re all huge big fans of ‘Starving’ and ‘Let Me Go,’ so were beyond stoked to get Hailee on song! She absolutely kills it in movies and in music. We feel like having her vocals take both the sonics and the feel of the song to another level!”
With an irresistible beat and an uplifting energy, the song has been stuck in our heads all day. “Woke up late / Somewhere far away from home / Pockets empty wallet gone / The sun is streaming all on down on my face / Yeah, last night was fun lets do it again / We both know we’re more than friends / And I know that’s all right” thing sing in the new single. “Why’s it so, so easy with the lights down? / Why’s it so, so easy when the night’s ours?”
