In case you missed it, 5 Seconds of Summer has been getting a ton of backlash after announcing that they’ll be going on tour with The Chainsmokers this summer. However, now that Ashton Irwin‘s gotten the brunt of it, fans are now coming to his defense.

So, why all the hate? Well, diehard 5SOS fans are pretty much livid that their favorite band has chosen to join the EDM-pop duo on tour — especially since Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall don’t have a great track record. In the past, they’ve said some very hateful things, so of course, fans would rather 5SOS not associate with them at all.

Unfortunately, things got completely out of hand when the 24-year-old took to Instagram following the announcement. In fact, the comments got so heated that he eventually had to turn them off altogether. That’s right! After some fans made brutal remarks about how he should have an alcohol relapse or start self-harming again, other fans with much better judgment came to his defense to show their support.

One fan wrote, “#WeStandWithAshtonIrwin the fact that people are hating on this beautiful man and telling him to relapse makes me sick. the way the 5sos fandom is treating him is completely disgusting. they are hating on him and only him it’s absolutely disrespectful. i’m so ashamed.”

Another fan of the band tweeted, “Honestly what makes me so angry that the same people hating on ash are the same ones hating tcs for being homophobic, racist, etc. in what world is it okay for you to say homophobia and racism isn’t okay, but promoting self harm is okay? none of it is okay. NONE.”

The good news is, those are just two of several supportive messages fans sent to the musician. In fact, “#WeStandWithAshtonIrwin” was even trending in the U.S. at one point. Plus, you’ll be glad to know that his sister confirmed that, despite all the hate, he’s doing OK.

When one fan expressed their concern for Ashton on Instagram, his sister Lauren said, “He’s perfectly fine. The hate doesn’t get to him, he’s stronger than you think.”

We’re so glad to hear that he’s fine. If you’re a 5SOS fan yourself, be sure to send Ashton a little extra love today. We’re sure he could use it.
