It may have taken nearly 20 years to happen, but Cole Sprouse is headed to the big screen again in the upcoming movie, Five Feet Apart. The official trailer drops so soon, but so far, we already know it’s going to be a tearjerker. The 26-year-old actor co-stars with Haley Lu Richardson where they play teens Will and Stella who both have cystic fibrosis. They fall in love, but because of their conditions, they have to maintain a distance between them and essentially can’t get too close to each other or touch. We know, tears already.

So is this based on a true story?

Director Justin Baldoni, known for his role as the babe that is Rafael Solano on Jane the Virgin, told Teen Vogue he got the idea for the film after talking with a friend who has cystic fibrosis and the challenges their health can bring to dating and relationships.

“I have always wanted to find a way to show young people in particular, that love is so much more than what we often see being celebrated and exploited in the world around us. So we set out to ask the question: What if the most intimate relationship of your life, was with someone you couldn’t be physically intimate with? Could love transcend human touch during the most vulnerable time of our life?'” Justin said.

While the characters and events in the movie might be fiction, the heart of the story comes from a very real place and there are many people who are living with CF and this is how their everyday lives are. Cole went on to say that he really wanted to make sure his character Will accurately represents what someone who has CF’s life is like.

“There are some roles that carry a real responsibility for accurate representation, this was one of them. Some say the currency of poetry is the acceptance of other poets, and I desire no audience more greatly than those who resonate with the challenges shown by the characters of this film. It’s my hope that we did them justice. This was all for you guys,” he said.

Seriously, getting all our tissues ready now.
