It looks like there might be some bad blood between Taylor Swift‘s fans and Shawn Mendes. On Sunday, November 17, the “If I Can’t Have You” singer appeared on John Mayer‘s Current Mood Instagram Live show and made headlines after laughing at a joke the 42-year-old made about Taylor’s song, “Lover.”
“Love the song,” he said. “I really like the song. I get a little chuckle because she says, ‘We can keep the Christmas lights up ’til January.’ And I go, ‘You’re insane. Everyone keeps their Christmas lights up until January.’ And I go, ‘Can you really?’ Because normally I take my Christmas lights down on December 29.’”
This joke came just days after the 29-year-old dropped an epic “Lover” remix featuring Shawn, but it didn’t end there. After the pair chatted through the 21-year-old’s verse on the song, John went back to the Christmas lights lyrics and seemingly made fun of it even more by adding his own words.
“We can keep the Christmas lights up till January. And then about January 5th, we’ll take the lights down. And then we’ll put ’em in a box and we’ll label that box Christmas Lights. Yeah, we’ll put ’em in the attic until next December,” he sung.

Naturally, fans were not happy when Shawn was seen laughing on camera, seemingly going along with the joke. Swifties took to social media and dragged the singer for not sticking up for Taylor.
“Making fun of Taylor’s lyrics but not the cringey bad lyrics Shawn added,” one fan wrote on Twitter with another adding, “Is this Shawn showing his true colors or something because yikes.”
As fans know, John and Taylor had a brief fling back in 2009, after they collaborated on their duet, “Half of My Heart.” When he ended things, she the wrote the song “Dear John.” In the track, she alleged that her former flame of took advantage of her because she was so young. Since then, John has allegedly responded to her claims about their relationship with his own song, “Paper Doll.” It’s safe to say there’s always been some tension between the two.
