On Thursday, January 23, rumors surfaced that Zac Efron might be playing the swashbuckling pirate Jack Sparrow in an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Although nothing has yet to be confirmed, some reports have said that the High School Musical alum is set to take on the role that Johnny Depp first made popular back in 2003.

Insiders have said that the prequel wouldn’t be a movie, but a series for Disney’s streaming service Disney+. The possible show would follow a young Captain Jack on various adventures throughout the world, just like the five films did. At this point, Disney has been pretty tight-lipped about the project, but fans hope that this dream will become a reality.

As fans know, Zac is no stranger to adventure so he would, no doubt, be happy to take on this epic role. In December 2019, the 32-year-old contracted what was believed to be typhoid or a similar bacterial infection while filming his upcoming survival series Killing Zac Efron in Papua New Guinea. When Zac arrived to an Australian hospital at the time, he was “reportedly” in stable condition.

After he saw all the messages from fans, the former Disney Channel star took to Instagram and broke his silence. He shared a health update and assured followers that he “bounced back” and returned to the United States. Illness or not, it seems like Zac is always ready to travel the world.

In November 2019, Quibi— a new digital, short-form mobile video network launching in April 2020 — announced that Zac would be filmed as he spent 21 days, totally off the grid, in the jungle on a remote island for the Killing Zac Efron series. Once the show officially launches, fans will watch as he survives with only basic supplies and a guide partner. Zac will also be listed as an executive producer.

“I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level,” he said in a statement that announced the show. “I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits!”
