Can we get a show of hands — who else was obsessed with Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin? We know we were. Well, you guys might want to brace yourselves because we have some super exciting news for you. The producer of the flick, Dan Link, just revealed that they’re already working on a sequel! OMG.
As fans know, the original cartoon had three movies in total — Aladdin, Aladdin: The Return of Jafar and Aladdin: The King of Thieves. And when Syfy Wire asked the producer if they’re planning on remaking the rest of the films, he revealed that the second movie is already in “early stages.”
“We’d love to. People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar,” he explained. “I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at, ‘Where’s the best way to go with these characters.’”
For those of you who missed it, the live-action remake of Aladdin starred Mena Massoud as the street rat we all know and love, Naomi Scott as Prince Jasmine and Will Smith as the hilarious genie. It hit screens on May 24, 2019, and it made over $1 billion at the box office. It was pretty epic seeing one of our favorite animated flicks come to life, and they seriously did an amazing job.
“The audience response has really touched us in thinking about where we can go with these stories,” he added. “And we feel like these characters have more adventures in store.”
This is the best news ever! Disney has also released live-action renditions of Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, The Jungle Book and Dumbo. Their live-action remake of Mulan is set to hit theaters in March 2020, and they’re also currently in the casting process for The Little Mermaid. We have so much to look forward to!
