Is Prince Ali returning? Disney fans are dying to know whether an Aladdin 2 live-action sequel to 2019’s Aladdin is still in the works.

Keep reading to learn everything we know about whether Aladdin 2 is happening!

What Happened to ‘Aladdin 2’?

Less than a year after Aladdin hit theaters in May 2019, a live-action sequel was confirmed.

According to Variety, the producers behind the first flick — Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich  signed on for the second. At the time, however, it was still unknown whether director Guy Ritchie would return for the sequel, but producers were reportedly hoping to bring back Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott!

As fans know, the original animation had three movies in total — AladdinAladdin: The Return of Jafar and Aladdin: The King of Thieves. Previously, when Syfy Wire asked the producer if they were planning on remaking the rest of the films, he revealed that the second movie was already in “early stages.”

“We’d love to. People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar,” Dan explained. “I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at, ‘Where’s the best way to go with these characters.’”

The first live-action remake made over $1 billion at the box office. It was pretty epic seeing the animated classic come to life, and they seriously did an amazing job.

“The audience response has really touched us in thinking about where we can go with these stories,” he added. “And we feel like these characters have more adventures in store.”

That’s not all. Back in December 2019, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a brand new spinoff series about Prince Anders was expected to stream on Disney+! For those who forgot, Prince Anders was a prince from a fictional kingdom called Skanland who visited Agrabah in the hopes of courting Princess Jasmine. Although he only had two scenes in the movie, he was pretty hilarious and made a big impression on viewers, so it’s safe to say that this new show is going to be epic!

Billy Magnussen starred as the handsome prince in the movie, and the outlet reported that not only will he reprise his role for the upcoming series, but it was actually his idea! Yep, Aladdin fans certainly have a lot to look forward to!

What Did Mena Massoud Say About the ‘Aladdin’ Sequel?

Despite the previous reports of the Aladdin sequel, Mena broke fans’ hearts in March 2023 when he revealed that he was not working on the film.

In response to a Twitter user who asked the actor, “We still getting Aladdin 2?” the Disney prince replied, “Very unlikely at this point.”

However, the original director made a more hopeful comment just one month prior to Mena’s statement. During a February 2023 interview with Collider, Guy explained that he’d “very much like” to film the sequel.

“I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit,” Guy told the outlet. “Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. … We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do, it would be great to go back there.”

Did Other ‘Aladdin’ Cast Members Comment on the Movie?

Aside from Mena’s public statement, none of the other lead cast members have spoken about their involvement in the movie. However, IMDb currently lists both Mena and Naomi for Aladdin 2 as acting credits.
