'Mean Girls' Musical Movie: Cast, Release Date, More

Get in losers, we’re getting a musical rendition of the Mean Girls movie! That’s right, the iconic 2004 movie-turned-Broadway musical is returning to the big screen in a movie musical (meta, right?). The film, which will premiere in theatres, is being produced and written by Mean Girls and Mean Girls: The Musical creator Tina Fey. “I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Tina said in a statement in January 2020. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”

Aside from her screenwriting duties, Tina will be producing the Paramount+ film alongside SNL‘s Lorne Michaels. In addition to writing the original 2004 Mean Girls script, Tina also wrote the 2017 Broadway show with music written by her husband, Jeff Richmond, and Nell Benjamin is behind the musical’s lyrics. Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are set to direct the movie musical.

“It has been a joy to work on Mean Girls and to watch it go from film, to musical, and now to musical film,” coproducer Lorne, who helped produce both the musical and 2004’s Mean Girls, said. “I am very proud that Tina’s story and characters continue to resonate with new generations.”

Tina originally wrote Mean Girls in 2004, which starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a transfer student from Africa attempting to fit into American high school for the first time, where she meets the tyrannical popular group known as The Plastics run by Regina George (played by Rachel McAdams).

In the movie musical, Angourie Rice, who is best known for her roles in Mare of Easttown and Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, will be playing Cady Heron. Reneé Rapp, who played Regina George in the Broadway musical of Mean Girls and also stars in the HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls, will reprise the role on-camera.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this iconic property back to the big screen in musical form with our incredible filmmaking team,” Paramount president of production Elizabeth Raposo said, via Variety.

OG Cast Cameos?

Reneé Rapp, who will play Regina George, told E! News she would do nearly anything to get the original 2004 cast on the set of Mean Girls.

“I’ll kiss or lick anybody to get all of them onset with me,” she said of the cast in an interview from March 2023. “She’s so hot,” Reneé said of OG cast member Lindsay Lohan. “She’s so mother. She’s in a cultural renaissance. She’s the s–t.”

Unfortunately, it seems Rachel McAdams will not be making any guest appearances! During an interview with Variety, Rachel confirmed that she was in talks with the creator about appearing in the film. However, thing’s didn’t quite come together. “Tina and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end.”

‘A Lot of It Is Different’

Reneé explained that “a lot” of the musical movie is different than the original Broadway musical during an interview with Us Weekly.

“Tina [Fey] is such a creative genius and such a creative freak, and her partner, Jeff Richmond, who does all of the music, is as well. So there’s definitely different things,” she teased. “There might be different songs. Some songs that are in the musical version might be in the movie or might not be.”

She continued: “But [Tina and Jeff] are so creative, and I really appreciate that they really try to work with young people and people that are of the current culture and what’s happening as opposed to being like, ‘We are going to do exactly what we think we’re gonna do.’ They’re very collaborative and really amazing. So some things are different, some things are the same.”

Ashley Park

Ashley Park will be starring in this upcoming Mean Girls adaptation, however, her character details are being kept under wraps.

Ashley is best known for playing Mindy Chen on Netflix’s Emily in Paris, and was also part of the original Mean Girls the Musical Broadway cast, playing Gretchen, which she earned a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical in 2018.
