After months of anticipation, Selena Gomez has finally dropped her new single, “Lose You To Love Me,” and it’s a total bop. Not only is it catchy AF, but the lyrics are seriously so amazing. But wait, who is the song about? Naturally, everyone went into overdrive trying to decode the lyrics, and some fans are convinced that the new tune is all about her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber!
In the new track, Selena sings about having to let go of a guy so that she can learn to love herself. It’s all about a toxic relationship, but in the end, the 27-year-old realizes that she’s stronger without the mysterious man. And while Selena hasn’t specified who the song is about, there are definitely some major clues that point to the “Love Yourself” crooner.
“You promised the world and I fell for it / I put you first and you adored it / Set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus / ‘Cause it wasn’t yours / I saw the signs and I ignored it / Rose-colored glasses all distorted,” the lyrics read. “Set fire to my purpose / And I let it burn / You got off on the hurtin’ / When it wasn’t yours, yeah.”
Fans were quick to point out that Justin’s 2015 album was called Purpose. Wow, the shade is so real right now.
“I gave my all and they all know it / You turned me down and now it’s showing / In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing, yeah,” Selena sang in the new song. “We’d always go into it blindly / I needed to lose you to find me / This dancing was killing me softly / I needed to hate you to love me, yeah.”
For those who forgot, the former Wizards of Waverly Place star split from Justin in May 2018, and the 25-year-old was spotted making out with his now wife, Hailey Baldwin, just two months later!
But wait, there’s more. Just hours after the song dropped, Hailey took to her Instagram Stories to share a screenshot of a song she was listening to. It was called “I’ll Kill You.” The song, which is by Summer Walker and features Jhené Aiko, is all about protecting your man from other women. Now, this could just be a coincidence, of course, but fans aren’t too convinced. But the model took to Instagram to explain that her post had nothing to do with Selena after all.
“Please stop with this nonsense… there is no ‘response.’ This is complete BS,” she seemingly wrote in a now-deleted comment.
Selena and Justin first started dating back in 2010, and were on and off for almost eight years. Their relationship was definitely a rollercoaster ride — one month they would be spotted packing on the PDA or walking hand-in-hand, and the next they’d be shading each other on social media or in interviews! Selena’s BFF Taylor Swift even seemingly revealed that the singer cheated on Selena at one point, when she liked a super shady post about it on Tumblr. And get this — if this song is about Justin, it wouldn’t be the first time. They’ve actually written numerous songs about one another over the years.
Well, whether “Lose You To Love Me” was inspired by Justin or not, there’s one thing that’s for sure — it’s an amazing song!
