Thanks to Liam Payne, One Direction fans are getting some major behind-the-scenes X Factor secrets. As fans know, the five-piece boyband was formed on the British reality show after each member auditioned individually back in 2010. The group went on an extended hiatus in December 2015.

During his Sky One documentary, Liam Payne: Straight Talking, the 26-year-old opened up about his time on the singing competition show and revealed that he almost didn’t agree to join the band.

“There’s a bit that’s never been seen,” he said about a scene from the show that never made it to air.

According to the singer, right after the group was formed Simon Cowell asked if anyone needed time to think about the decision. Liam said he immediately raised his hand, left the room and called his dad for advice. His dad told him, it’s better to have “one out of five of something, instead of 100% of nothing” and convinced him to join the band.

“This was literally the end of my dream if I didn’t get it right,” he told Ant Middleton, the documentary’s host.

The “Stack It Up” singer also hinted during the documentary — which aired on Tuesday, November 12 — that he wants to get back together with ex-girlfriend, Cheryl Cole.

“She’s one of the most, if not the most, important people in my life,” he admitted. “I’m lucky I have someone who understands what I’m going through. The one thing I was missing as a man in the relationship I had, was a level understanding about what she was feeling about stuff. I think I learnt through being away that, while I want to protect her, there’s a big part of her that wants to protect me.”

That’s not all, Liam even joked that the pair might still get back together “if she plays her cards right.” He then went on to say he’d be in trouble for admitting that.
